"A gorgeous and imaginative bedtime book about facing your fears and battling bullies with kindness."
—Mike Nawrocki, co-creator of Veggie Tales and author of The Dead Sea Squirrels series
Sir Drake the Brave
The magical story of how a boy with a disability who is bullied finds the hero within.
As Drake gets ready for bed, his mother entertains his questions about tyrants, pirates, and dragons―which are really questions about the power of bullies. Their conversation reminds us all that “Not even kings are allowed to be mean.”
Targeted for young children and their caregivers, Sir Drake the Brave is a declaration of ethics, integrity and faith: that kindness and courage ultimately are stronger than any sort of small-minded bullying or hate. Fun and entertaining, the story teaches lessons of accepting others, and welcoming others, including those who are different.

From the Author
The inspiration behind "Sir Drake The Brave" came from my own son Justin and his toddler nighttime fears and as the story evolved, later also from my dear friend Elizabeth's son (adopted from Haiti) uses a prosthetic leg.
She commented once that there were so few picture books for kids who are differently-abled and even fewer in which that child is the hero of the story--with the prosthetic just subtly there but not the point of the story.
So, my mind started mulling...
For my son,
who inspired this story as a little boy
with his own kindness and courage
and for Kenbe Rogers and all those
whose big hearts, hope and strength
make them unstoppable.

From the Illustrator
I begin work every day with clean hands. Within minutes my hands are bright green, or purple, or whatever!
One of the reasons I enjoy clay so much is that I don’t really know how to do it. Each illustration is a discovery process as I study nature and animals and try to figure out how to bring them to life in clay.
My finished clay critters live in pizza boxes, and I suspect that they play at night while we slumber.
I was an Art Director for fifteen years and won some international 3D illustration awards and a Grammy nomination. But my passion is, and always has been, illustrating and writing for children.
I am the Regional Advisor for the Midsouth SCBWI, and a member of the SCBWI Bologna Team. I love to travel and have done school visits all over the world including Taiwan, Brazil, Switzerland, and Hong Kong.
